SEE: One Health Symposium - New College of Florida

On September 30, the Health, Culture, and Societies (HCS) Program at New College of Florida will host an interdisciplinary symposium, “One Health Symposium: Human, Animal, and Environmental Futures,” from 3:30 to 6:00 p.m. The symposium invites audiences to rethink the meaning of health by exploring the interconnected well-being of humans, animals, and the broader ecological systems they inhabit. The symposium will also draw on the strengths of New College’s disciplinary and interdisciplinary programs, including HCS, Animal Wellbeing and Conservation, Environmental Studies, and Marine Mammal Science, to explore the implications of the One Health framework for Florida and beyond.

The featured speakers include leading scientists, researchers, and public health officials working in the field of One Health. They include Dr. Michael E. von Fricken, Associate Professor and Director of the One Health Center of Excellence at the University of Florida; Wade Brennan, Manager of Sarasota County Mosquito Management Services; and Dr. Krystan Wilkinson, Program Manager and Senior Scientist with Brookfield Zoo Chicago’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program.

The symposium will explore topics including emerging infectious diseases at the human-animal interface, promoting public health through mosquito population management, and the health of Sarasota’s resident dolphin community. The presentations will be followed by a panel discussion and audience Q&A.

The general public is welcome to attend.

The event will take place in Chae Auditorium, Heiser Natural Sciences Complex, New College of Florida, 500 College Drive, Sarasota, FL 34243.
