Cambodia held the official launch ceremony yesterday of the One Health for Cambodia Project (OH4CAM), to strengthen the national health system and improve responses to infectious disease threats. The event was co-chaired by Yok Sambath, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health and Chair of the Inter-Ministerial Committee for One Health, and Christof Weigelmeier, Deputy Head of Mission and Head of Development Cooperation at the German Embassy.
The OH4CAM project is designed to enhance cross-sectoral collaboration and strengthen the One Health approach to prevent and respond to global health challenges, including antimicrobial resistance (AMR), zoonotic diseases, and emerging infectious diseases.
According to the Ministry of Health, the project focuses on four key areas: developing a One Health policy and governance framework; strengthening the capacity of technical officials and digital systems; modernising surveillance systems and laboratories; and promoting public awareness and partnership in implementing the One Health approach.
The initiative is expected to improve health data management, emergency response capabilities, and disease surveillance from the community level to the national level through the use of digital technologies and enhanced laboratory systems.
The ceremony was attended by representatives from relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries and the Ministry of Environment, as well as provincial authorities from target areas.
Development partners also participated, including WHO, FAO, KfW, ADB, CIRAD, IRD, and the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia, alongside diplomatic representatives.
The ministry stated that the OH4CAM project will play a key role in strengthening Cambodia’s health system, improving preparedness for public health risks, and ensuring greater health security for the population nationwide.
