Duke One Health Team Members Publish a Commentary on Zoonotic Influenza Viruses in Domestic Animals
Recently, Duke One Health team members Laura Borkenhagen, Mai-Juan Ma, and Greg Gray and Professor Mo Salman (Colorado State University) published an important review article in the in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. They reviewed the risk of human infections with influenza A viruses circulating in poultry, swine, horses, cats, and dogs and concluded that, while all have risk of contributing to a pandemic, the greatest risk now seems to be from swine viruses. Their findings and conclusion are novel and a bit of a departure from the mainstream thinking, which is frequently most concerned about avian influenza viruses.
