How ‘One Health’ Is Evolving the Practice of Anesthesiology

"We cannot escape the interconnectedness between humans and other animals. Meat consumption, the explosion in pet numbers—which occurred as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic–induced lockdown—and the contributions of domestic and non-domestic species to public health firmly shifted our medical commonalities into focus. It is within this context that the concept of “One Health” has become a popular topic of discussion.One Health is defined by the CDC as “a collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary approach—working at the local, regional, national and global levels—with the goal of achieving optimal health outcomes that respect the interconnection between people, animals, plants and their shared environment.” While many of these issues may appear outside of the sphere of influence for practicing anesthesiologists, it is important to consider how there may be an interconnectedness that can dually improve clinical medicine and public health. ..."
