Entitled: “One Health, Advancing Well-being Through Medical Teamwork

Presented by *Craig N. Carter, DVM, PhD, UK Professor Emeritus at invitation from Professor Eric Vanzant, PhD

Among various other important issues discussed included a short history of the development of the One Health concept going back to the 19th century. The importance of the National Animal Health Network was presented including its role in providing millions of COVID tests at over 20 Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratories at a time when the human diagnostic laboratories were overwhelmed by the need for testing thereby marking the first event of  its kind in veterinary history; this further demonstrated the importance of a One Health approach.

The presentation finished by highlighting the embracement of the One Health concept by the G20 and major global health agencies (WHO, FAO, UNEP, WOAH) as a collaborative approach to achieving optimal health outcomes for people, animals, plants, and the environment by recognizing their interdependence. Its aims are to tackle interconnected challenges like zoonotic diseasesantimicrobial resistance (AMR), climate change, and food security, using multisectoral strategies to strengthen pandemic preparedness and national resilience.  This coincided with Dr. Carter’s overview of the new UK One Health Center.
