Portrait of a Dedicated U.S. One Health Leader

 

Steven Webster Atwood, VMD, MD, MPH, direct descendant of the American orator and statesman Daniel Webster, is the founder of Animal Health Care Associates, Ltd., a mixed-animal general practice located on the island of Martha's Vineyard.

 

Dr. Atwood graduated from the University of Wyoming in 1975 with a B.Sc. degree in Molecular Biology and graduated with his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (V.M.D.) degree from the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. Dr. Atwood completed an internship in small animal medicine, surgery and critical care at the New Haven Central Hospital for Veterinary Medicine in 1981. He received his Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) degree from the University of Health Sciences School of Medicine, St. John's, Antigua in 2006 and his Master of Public Health (M.P.H.) degree in Public Health Practice from the University of Massachusetts Medical School and School of Public Health in 2011. He is Board Certified in Public Health by the National Board of Public Health Examiners.

 

Dr. Atwood was awarded membership in the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (MRCVS) of England in 2004 and serves on the Board of Overseers of the University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine and the Board of Trustees of Falmouth Academy. He has served as a member and as Chairman of the Massachusetts State Board of Veterinary Medicine for many years. He is also a member of the One Health Initiative team’s Advisory Board https://onehealthinitiative.com/advisory-board/, a collaborative and integrative effort between physicians, veterinarians, nurses and other scientific, health and environmentally-related disciplines to improve quality of life of humans and animals through cooperation and partnerships. In 2010, Dr. Atwood was inducted into the prestigious National Academies of Practice in Washington, D.C. as a Distinguished Practitioner and Fellow (FNAP) in Veterinary Medicine. Election to the Veterinary Medicine Academy is limited to 150 veterinarians worldwide. He was elected Chairman of the Veterinary Medicine Academy in 2013. He is also an elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine (FRSM) and of the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH), both of London, England.

 

In Philadelphia, PA. (USA), the University of Pennsylvania named the Steven W. Atwood Library & Information Commons and the Steven W. Atwood, V.M.D., M.D. Digital Laboratory in his honor.
