February 1, 2013 DAI’s Marguerite Pappaioanou Leads One Health Discussion at Bangkok Conference In recent years tens of thousands of people have died—including more than 18,000 in the 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic—of disease born from the interaction of people, animals, and ecosystems. Outbreaks of swine flu, avian flu, and other zoonotic diseases could be stopped if authorities cooperated across borders and other barriers, DAI’s Dr. Marguerite Pappaioanou told an audience January 31 at the Prince Mahidol Award Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.
