The One Health Program at UH Mānoa began as a project selected by the Provost’s Strategic Investment Initiative competition in 2020 that represented a collaboration between faculty from several UH Mānoa colleges including John A. Burns School of Medicine, the Thompson School of Social Work & Public Health, the Pacific Biosciences Research Center (PBRC) in the School of Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) and the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources (CTAHR).
This project led to the development of the UH Mānoa One Health Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Certificate program that explores the interconnections between human, animal, plant and environmental health.
The relationship between the UH Mānoa One Health program and Fukuoka Prefecture began in August 2022 when Dr. Isao Kurauchi and several representatives of the Fukuoka Prefectural Assembly met to exchange ideas about One Health education with One Health faculty and students at JABSOM. These discussions continued over the next months and an Memorandum of Understanding was signed by President Lassner, Provost Bruno, and Governor Seittaro Hatori of Fukuoka Prefecture in April 2023 to promote One Health between the University of Hawaiʻi and the Fukuoka Prefectural Government.
Also in April 2023, One Health officials met with Vice Chancellor Tsuzuki and others from the Tsuzuki Educational Group to discuss a collaboration in One Health education with their universities. These discussions and a series of follow-up communications were facilitated by Emeritus Regent Joseph Blanco and Mr. Franklin Mukai and will culminate with the signing of another MOU between Tsuzuki Educational Group and the University of Hawaiʻi.
