The workshop brought decision makers and scientists together to agree on a list of priority zoonotic diseases. In addition to strengthening the federal, provincial and animal/human health cross-sectoral collaboration, the workshop resulted in a plan for future disease control efforts. Speaking at the concluding ceremony in Islamabad, experts from the CDC said that the Zoonotic diseases are important health concerns, and control requires collaboration between Pakistan’s veterinary and human health sectors.  The participants of the workshop were trained in the One Health Zoonotic Disease Prioritisation process and One Health Systems Mapping and Analysis Resource Toolkit.  The final report, approved by all ministries representing core voting members, will be published after around two months after this workshop. Dr. Stephanie Salyer, a veterinary epidemiologist with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the Center for Global Health, Dr. Kate Varela, a veterinary medical officer-ORISE Research Participant within the One Health Office at CDC and Grace Goryoka, a health scientist-ORISE Research Participant within the One Health Office at CDC conducted the workshop.

Dermatologists can learn from veterinarians, AAD presenter reports August 1, 2017 Dermatologists can learn from veterinarians as they research treatments for pets’ skin conditions and how that could relate to treatments for human conditions, including atopic dermatitis and rosacea, according to a presenter at the American Academy of Dermatology Summer Meeting in New York. “Dermatologists, veterinarians and scientists can learn a lot from one another,” Jennifer Gardner, MD, FAAD, an assistant professor of dermatology at University of Washington in Seattle and a collaborating member at the UW Center for One Health Research, stated in an AAD news release. “When we work together and share our expertise, it can improve the health of humans and animals alike, as well as the health of the environment they share.” Gardner directed a session titled, “Comparative Dermatology: Cases at the Intersection of Human and Veterinary Dermatology and the One Health Paradigm.” ...   AVMA Presents Meritorious Service Award To Dr. Bruce Kaplan July 24, 2017 The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) presented its Meritorious Service Award to Dr. Bruce Kaplan ’63, a staunch advocate of the one-health concept, during the organization’s national meeting. The Meritorious Service Award is the AVMA’s highest honor for a veterinarian who has brought honor and distinction to the veterinary profession through personal, professional, or community service activities outside organized veterinary medicine and research. “The Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is proud of Dr. Kaplan’s dedicated service to promoting the concept of one health as a core element of veterinary medicine,” Dean Calvin Johnson said. “We congratulate Dr. Kaplan for his well-deserved recognition.” Dr. Kaplan, who earned his DVM from Auburn in 1963, is a retired veterinarian, formerly a writer, editor, and consultant on public affairs issues. He current devotes his time to promoting the one-health movement along with a collaborative team of human and veterinary medical experts. The one-health concept proposes that human, animal and environmental health is inextricably interconnected. One Health Arkansas is an initiative that has been primarily led by the veterinary community within the state. This year’s conference continues the attempt to expand the involvement to include the human health side of the equation (physicians, nurses, and pharmacists) in order to accomplish the objectives of the One Health Initiative. We hope to do this by informing participants on what this initiative is, how to utilize the initiative within your respective profession, and address specifically some One Health issues such as the Human Animal Bond, human health concerns from interacting with animals in various public settings, and tying together animal and human health emergency preparedness. Chronic Pain in Dogs and Cats Workshop - Hosted by National Institutes of Health (NIH) on Nov. 29-30, 2017   “We want to reach a large audience in hopes of promoting research and analgesic development for companion animals with translational benefit to humans.”   Please consider attending the upcoming Chronic Pain in Dogs and Cats Workshop that will be hosted by NIH on Nov. 29-30, 2017. We want to reach a large audience in hopes of promoting research and analgesic development for companion animals with translational benefit to humans. Despite advances, chronic pain is one of the most poorly understood and under treated medical problems facing veterinary medicine today. One of the most frustrating aspects of developing therapeutics for treating chronic pain in veterinary medicine is the lack of validated methods to measure chronic pain in different species and diseases. Similarly, translational success has often been lacking when taking analgesics from animal models to human clinical trials. Numerous reviews have highlighted a lack of translation of basic research into new approved therapeutics for treating persistent pain in humans. The use of spontaneous painful disease in companion animals is one of the changes that could help improve translation of basic science to new therapeutics to act as a bridge between preclinical and clinical studies. The ultimate goal is to reduce failure rates in human clinical trials with resultant new therapeutics for humans and animals. For this bridge to work, we need valid outcome measures in animal spontaneous disease conditions and opportunities to share and promote knowledge.
