About – BEACON

“The Biothreats Emergence, Analysis and Communications Network (BEACON) is an open source informal surveillance program designed to revolutionize global biothreats surveillance and response. Leveraging advanced artificial intelligence (AI), large language models (LLMs), and a network of globally based experts, BEACON rapidly collects, analyzes, and disseminates information on emerging infectious diseases affecting humans, animals, and the environment. By providing timely and actionable insights, BEACON’s mission is to empower communities and public health officials to take proactive measures, preventing outbreaks and mitigating the spread of diseases. We believe this information should be available and accessible for everyone, from public health experts and clinicians to educators, journalists, and the general public. The program aims to provide context for why a new biological event matters and verifies new reports through established methodology described below.  …”

“ … Dedicated to the One Health concept, BEACON fosters collaboration among stakeholders worldwide, including public health agencies, researchers, and the general public. By promoting transparency, data sharing, and equitable access to information, BEACON strengthens global health security and contributes to a safer, more resilient world.

Our Values:

  • Transparency, accuracy, and timeliness
  • Apolitical
  • Equitable system access
  • A public good that is freely available to all
  • Dedicated to the One Health concept, reporting on emerging threats to humans, animals, plants, and the environment.  …”

The future of medicine in a One Health world – By John L. Gittleman, D. Phil.

August 8, 2026

Dr. Gittleman argues that modern medicine must expand its traditional boundaries to adopt a new patient: the environment.  He states that integrating One Health into the medical arsenal is no longer optional, but a vital requirement for sustaining human life within a rapidly changing ecosystem.

In Memoriam, James H. Steele, DVM, MPH: Dr. Steele, a One Health leader, died November 10, 2013

July 30, 2026

SEE: In Memoriam, James H. Steele, DVM, MPH: Dr. Steele, a One Health leader, died November 10, 2013 – One Health Initiative

Dr. James H. Steele, known as the “father of veterinary epidemiology” said good human health requires good animal health.

Dr. Steele didn’t just advocate for animal health; he fundamentally changed how we view the interconnectedness of all living things. By bridging the gap between veterinary medicine and global public health, he essentially laid the foundation for what we now call One Health.

His philosophy—that the health of humans is inextricably linked to the health of animals and the environment—is more relevant today than ever.

A foundational pioneer of the One Health movement, which champions the inseparable link between human, animal, and environmental health.

Key Contributions to One Health

  • Founding the CDC Veterinary Division: In 1947, Dr. Steele established the Veterinary Public Health Division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), integrating veterinary medicine into mainstream public health infrastructure.
  • Pioneering Zoonotic Disease Control: He spent his career studying and controlling diseases shared by animals and humans (zoonoses) on a global scale, helping shape programs for the World Health Organization (WHO) and Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). “As the first US assistant surgeon general for veterinary affairs at the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta, he pioneered the simple but powerful philosophy that human health is intimately connected to the health of animals and our surrounding environment.” as noted by the American Veterinary One Health Society (AVOHS) formerly called American Veterinary Epidemiology Society.]
  • Advocating “One World, One Health”: Long before the modern terminology became a global standard, he promoted the holistic concept that modern medicine must embrace “One World, One Health, One Medicine”.

The Legacy of Dr. James H. Steele

Why It Matters Today

In an era of global travel and habitat encroachment, Dr. Steele’s warning is a modern reality. Whether it is managing avian influenza or understanding the origins of COVID-19, we are constantly reminded that we cannot protect humans without also protecting the animals we live alongside.

“The health of the people is the highest law.” — A sentiment Dr. Steele lived by, extending that ‘people’ could only be healthy if their animals were too.

On a personal note: Jim Steele was a longstanding valued friend, confidant and colleague since 1962; he shall be missed.  I spoke with Jim on many occasions over the years.  Indeed, we spoke by telephone on a monthly basis over the last 15 plus years, primarily pertaining to One Health and public health issues, among others.  As our other physician One Health Initiative team colleague, Tom Monath, MD said, “Jim had an unbelievably long and remarkable life. His spirit and accomplishments will live on.” –-Bruce Kaplan, DVM

One Health

Illustration of One Health relationships
The One Health relationship between humans, animals, and the environment

The One Health concept is a rapidly expanding global strategy to enhance human, animal and environmental health from an interdisciplinary perspective. Health challenges impacting animals and our environment can have a significant effect on humans, as well. The pieces fit together like a puzzle, each element impacting the other in intricate ways.

Below you will find examples of work being done by the researchers in the Department of Comparative, Diagnostic and Population Medicine, to both identify these threats and find solutions for them.

The UF College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to this initiative. UF CVM Alumna Dr. Lisa Conti dedicated her career to One Health and her legacy lives on through the Lisa Conti One Health fund. Established in her honor, this fund continues her work and supports future research initiatives of our faculty and students. More information about Dr. Conti, and ways to join her in supporting research in One Health, can be found on the Lisa Conti One Health advancement page.
