Pirbright collaboration illuminates path to preventing future pandemics through ‘One Health vaccinology’
June 26, 2021

“ … To effectively tackle diseases that infect animals and people, known as zoonoses, both veterinary and medical professions must work in synergy. Drawing on their collective expertise, scientists from The Pirbright Institute, Kenyan Medical Research Institute (KEMRI-Wellcome Trust), University of Nairobi, University of Oxford and BioVacc Consulting Ltd have published a Nature Perspective article that advocates the use of ‘One Health vaccinology’ – a concept which aims to unite the currently siloed medical and veterinary research industries. They highlight several areas within immunology, vaccine technology and vaccine deployment which, if optimised, could transform vaccine production and enhance our control of existing and potential disease outbreaks. …”

Whole-of-Government Effort Will Develop Next Generation of COVID-19 Treatments, Better Prepare U.S. to Respond to Future Virus Threats
“… Through collaboration within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and its National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), and the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA), part of the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR), this plan – called the Antiviral Program for Pandemics – will respond to the urgent need for antivirals to treat COVID-19 by spurring the availability of medicines to prevent serious illness and save lives. It also will build sustainable platforms for discovery and development of antivirals for other viruses with pandemic potential, helping better prepare the nation to face future viral threats. …”

The Flamingo Fall Time And Other Stories: My Rotation Of Medical School At Miami Zoo | FIU News
June 19, 2021
“Michael Valente graduated from FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (HWCOM) in April. Next month, Dr. Valente completed his pediatric residency at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. Here he shares his experience during a recent clinical pilot rotation at the Miami Zoo. And he explains why understanding animal health is important to human health. The zoo internship is now a recognized elective at HWCOM. … I hope this relationship between the FIU Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine and Miami Zoo encourages future doctors to think about One Health and incorporate it into their practice. It was an honor and privilege to work with the Miami Zoo team to develop and control this revolutionary rotation. I’m really excited to see the impact it will have on future medical students at the FIU.”

June 13, 2021
“… We welcome the focus of world leaders on One Health, which is a collaborative effort to achieve health for people, animals and the environment at the local, national and global level. We urge G7 leaders to go a step further, beyond focusing on zoonotic diseases and antimicrobial resistance, which simply isn’t enough to truly build pandemic preparedness.
Future health threats could develop from different origins, patterns, nature or impact. All aspects of One Health must be included if we are to improve global health security, including tackling other diseases, such as NTDs. …”
