The new saRNA (self-amplifying) vaccine just approved in Japan is expected to provide a range of benefits with lower side effects than other messenger RNA vaccines but there are some possible downsides too

Most of us are familiar with vaccines that benefit us humans but are less aware of the role of vaccines for veterinary purposes also relevant in the development of vaccines for humans. These outnumber human options, partly due to animal vaccines having fewer regulatory requirements than human vaccines, resulting in less time and money involved in the creation and production of animal vaccines.

In the past, the human vaccine development process generally took 10 to 15 years, whereas the animal vaccine process only took an average of 5 to 7 years to produce. The importance of veterinary-related vaccines is in domestic animals and wildlife prevention against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, and equine influenza, to mention only a few. That there are benefits to human and animal health is core to the One Health approach, which also integrates plant and environmental health. …”

A new £1.5m hub will support the sharing of data and findings on ‘vector-borne’ diseases among the UK research community and with policymakers.

“… Preventing and controlling the spread of these diseases however can be difficult, as the pathogens’ lifecycles often involve several domestic and wild animal species, and they can be very sensitive to environmental conditions. The Hub leaders are therefore taking a ‘One Health’ approach, which considers the impact of infections that occur in both animals and humans in an interdisciplinary way that encompasses an understanding of the role of the environment and global change. …”

“ … Unger: It does, totally. Well you’ve given us a lot to think about this week. Over the next year, Dr. Nori, what’s one area you’d like to see the most progress in related to antimicrobial use?

Dr. Nori: Yes, thank you for that question, I’m so excited about it. So I would like to take more of a one health approach in how we address really all of the crisis that we’re currently dealing with. I don’t see antimicrobial resistance as separate from the risk of climate change and human health or so many other crises that we’re dealing with, displaced peoples, et cetera, conflicts.

Antimicrobial resistance is at the root of all of these things. All of those other crises will worsen antimicrobial resistance. So we have to come at these problems from a collaborative, multidisciplinary way and realize that they’re all linked and we can’t really put them in silos.

So what that means is going big with policies that address all of these things, going big with funding and public awareness campaigns. And really this is to protect the health of future generations, existing generations but creating a better environment for us to be able to exist for the many, many years to come. …”

This means we want governments to recognise that the health of people animals, and our planet is deeply connected.

Climate change could increase the risk of infectious diseases, including diseases that can pass from animals to people. (6) Environmental destruction brings wild animals, domestic animals and people living closer together, which also increases the risk of these diseases.

For working horses, donkeys, and mules to keep providing such an essential service to families, they must be supported by an effective animal health system. In other words, their owners need to be able to access quality healthcare services that are staffed by qualified animal health practitioners who have access to veterinary medicines and vaccines.

This means that working equids can have a life worth living while supporting families to have a secure income and access to food and water and help them become resilient to climate shocks.”

The pandemic agreement should create strong obligations and ample funding for One Health surveillance across the human-animal-environment interface. Governance reforms should harmonize existing international agreements for addressing the upstream drivers of pandemics, including deforestation, intensive agricultural practices, wildlife trade, and climate change.⁹

Conclusion

If these 5 reforms succeed in the Geneva negotiations, the world would be far better prepared to detect, report, and respond to novel outbreaks. Lifesaving countermeasures would be developed more quickly and allocated more equitably. With May 2024 fast approaching and at a time of intense diplomatic negotiations, the international community must not lose sight of what drove it to transformational law reforms in the first place. Nations must meet this historic moment with bold action on scientific exchange, equity, finance, accountability, and One Health. A more secure and fairer world is at stake.”
