“Poultry is one of South Carolina’s largest agricultural industries, generating $1.5 billion annually. But the bacterium Campylobacter is threatening this economic stronghold.

Campylobacter is responsible for many food poisoning and diarrheal diseases in humans. Poultry is considered one of the main sources. To help fight this enemy, Clemson University professor Khaled Abdelaziz and his team are researching the use of probiotics to improve poultry gut health and control foodborne pathogens. This research is based on the One Health initiative, a worldwide strategy for expanding all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment.  …”

“CONCLUSION

The current economic, social, and environmental trajectories at the global scale and within most regions of the world, follow an unsustainable development path. Without being more effectively integrated by bottom-up initiatives, better coordinated, and accompanied by well-crafted and relevant science, governments will not move. If we fail to see the broader vision encompassed by the One Health concept, we will be destined to miss an opportunity to better human, animal, plant, and ecosystem well-being. Our future is in our collective hands: Let’s hope that we grasp and grab the chance: Oneness in One Health!”

“ … What is briefly described above only touches the surface of the linkages and lessons to be gleaned from studying other species. And with growing recognition of the interface between animals, humans, and ecosystem health, known as One Health, we are in the early days of benefitting from such connections. 

What will be needed is a strong investment push in new research into the reproductive health of animals with the aim of discovering what can be usefully applied to improve reproductive health and fight cancer in women and men…”
