National Antibiotic Resistance Strategy for Human Health in France (chinacdc.cn)

December 9, 2022

“… Antimicrobial resistance (AMR), in particular antibiotic resistance, is a long-standing priority for the French government. Action plans in human health coordinated by the Ministry of Health have been in place for more than 20 years, while plans in animal health have been coordinated by the Ministry of Agriculture since 2012 (6). The first Interministerial Committee for Health was dedicated to AMR, with a specific focus on antibiotic resistance. In November 2016, the French government adopted the Antibiotic Resistance Interministerial National Action Plan, using a One Health approach (7). This action plan is organized around five objectives: 1) raising awareness among the general public and healthcare professionals; 2) education; 3) research and innovation; 4) monitoring and surveillance; and 5) interministerial and international action governance. Regular One Health brochures are published, presenting a brief overview of the implemented initiatives and their impact (1,8).  …”

Addressing the urgent health challenges of climate change and ecosystem degradation from a One Health perspective: what can veterinarians contribute? – PubMed (nih.gov)

December 8, 2022

Abstract

Since the field of One Health was introduced in the early 2000s, veterinary medicine has provided leadership in working with other disciplines and sectors to identify effective, sustainable solutions to complex health problems that are shared by humans, animals, and the environment. Human-induced climate change has accelerated since the Industrial Age, resulting in serious adverse human, animal, and environmental health consequences. We summarize several drivers of climate change and ecosystem degradation connected to veterinary medicine. Building on previous studies and observations of others, we propose a set of urgent and actionable recommendations for individual veterinarians and the veterinary profession to mitigate and adapt to the health risks posed by climate change and ecosystem degradation at community, local, state, national, and international levels. In addition, we call for emphasizing the foundational relationship between climate change and ecosystem health to human, animal, and environmental health; integrating environmental health, climate change, and the diagnosis and treatment of climate-related adverse health outcomes into veterinary medical education and research; and providing ever-greater national and global leadership and participation by the veterinary medical profession to confront the causes and health consequences of human-induced climate change and ecosystem degradation, working in collaboration with other health professions, disciplines, and sectors.

Preventing the next pandemic in East Asia and the Pacific | Philstar.com

December 3, 2022

“… Pandemics are preventable, if policymakers are willing to plan and finance an approach that recognizes that that human health is inseparable from the health of the environment and animals, both wild and domesticated. This approach, which emphasizes prevention, is known as “One Health” because it rests on an understanding of the interdependence of humans and the natural environment and is designed as an integrated framework.

One Health is particularly relevant for the East Asia and Pacific region, which is undergoing large-scale and rapid landscape, trade, consumption and demographic change and is one of the global hotspots for emerging infectious diseases caused by transmission from animals to humans. SARS, the Nipah virus and H5N1 viruses all emerged from East and Southeast Asia, not to mention COVID-19, and research suggests that the next global pandemic could begin again in this region. …”
