We Need One Health Prevention Approaches to Infectious Disease  – Impakter

November 25, 2022

Learning from the past: The World Bank evaluates its early COVID responses in a new study

Impakter

By *Richard Seifman, JD, MBA – November 25, 2022 in HealthPolitics & Foreign Affairs

As a global community, we have gone through and continue to deal with COVID, an infectious disease that resulted from a spillover from the animal world and should, in all logic, require a One Health approach. Covid has killed millions, made many more millions sick, and had a devastating effect on the social fabric, and economies.

For developing countries, it has been particularly harmful. COVID is not gone yet, and China, as case numbers are on the rise again, continues its zero-COVID policy despite the social unrest it creates.  …”

EXCHANGE AND COORDINATION: CHALLENGES OF THE GLOBAL ONE HEALTH MOVEMENT

November 23, 2022

SEEJPH - South Eastern European Journal of Public Health

View of EXCHANGE AND COORDINATION: CHALLENGES OF THE GLOBAL ONE HEALTH MOVEMENT (seejph.com)

Current economic, social, and environmental trajectories within most world regions are unsustainable. Interaction between bottom-up initiatives and top-down good governance is essential to change them.  The One Health movement, made up of many organizations, groups, and individuals from diverse backgrounds and disciplines, seeks to redress the present trajectories but has lacked coordination and cooperation, limiting its effectiveness to date. We take a snapshot of groups/organizations working to promote One Health, explore options to increase cooperation and coordination among global One Health stakeholders, and propose systemic strategies that could positively impact animals, people, the planet, plants, and politics.

Central Asian Countries Show Commitment to a Cross-regional Approach to Pandemic Prevention – Modern Diplomacy

November 16, 2022

Government officials representing health, environment, and agriculture sectors from all of Central Asian countries participated in a regional ministerial meeting Protecting Livestock and Preventing Pandemics that took place in Almaty today. The participants reaffirmed commitment to cooperating on One Health–a cross-sectoral approach that aims to help the region prevent future pandemics. The participants signed a communiqué giving a formal start to the development of the Central Asia One Health Framework for Action and a call for joint resource mobilization in support of the initiative.

Managing global health risks requires full cooperation between the livestock, environmental and public health sectors, at the national, regional, and global levels. One Health is an integrated, unifying approach that aims to sustainably balance and optimize the health of people, animals, and ecosystems. It recognizes that the health of humans, domestic and wild animals, plants, and the wider environment are closely linked and inter-dependent. …”

“SINGAPORE, Nov. 7, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The 7th World One Health Congress (WOHC), the world’s premier event to advance the One Health agenda, began today at the Sands Expo & Convention Centre in Singapore with more than 1400 in-person and 1000 virtual attendees from academic institutions, civil society, government bodies, private sector and multilateral organisations around the world. Mdm Halimah Yacob, President of the Republic of Singapore, graced the Opening Ceremony as its Guest-of-Honour and delivered a speech.

The five-day Congress hosted by Singapore’s SingHealth Duke-NUS Global Health Institute (SDGHI) under the auspices of the SingHealth Duke-NUS Academic Medical Centre is themed ‘Integrating Science, Policy and Clinical Practice: A One Health Imperative Post-COVID-19’. It seeks to advance the global One Health movement to improve health and well-being by preventing and mitigating crises that originate at the animal-human-environment interface.

With Temasek Foundation as the Pinnacle Sponsor, this is the first WOHC to take place in person after the COVID-19 outbreak, and will provide a pivotal platform for promoting multi- sectoral efforts and collaboration. …”

“… Other notable panel discussions will cover topics such as ‘Global Financing and the One Health Agenda’, chaired by Dr Franck Berthe of the World Bank, and ‘National Sovereignty and Global Solidarity for Health Security’, chaired by Professor David Heymann from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, United Kingdom [member, One Health Initiative Advisory Board].

“The crux of the One Health paradigm is about recognising our global interconnectivity across not just the human experience, but animal and environmental determinants as well. This has never been more apparent than throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, during which we have seen first-hand just how much advancing health equity relies on our collective understanding and response to global health threats,” said Professor Wang Linfa, Co-Chairman of the WOHC 2022 Steering Committee and Professor at Duke-NUS Medical School. “This Congress is a well-timed testament to that and provides a platform to help move the needle in fostering broad collaboration and impact to advance One Health. …”

Change Cannot Wait: Building Resilient Health Systems in the Shadow of COVID-19 – World | ReliefWeb

November 5, 2022

Countries Need to Fundamentally Change Health Systems to Better Prepare for Future Shocks

Effective governance and partnerships key to building health system resilience

WASHINGTON, Nov. 3, 2022 – As the experience from COVID-19 has shown, countries need to take transformative action to build stronger, more resilient health systems, says a new World Bank report. Boosting health system resilience now reaps large dividends when emergencies occur. To do so, governments need to improve their health sector governance, cross-sectoral partnerships based on a One Health approach that prioritizes health service delivery, and pandemic prevention, preparedness, and response (PPR).  …”

One Health (pa.gov)

November 2, 2022

One Health is a transdisciplinary concept to improve the well-being of humans, animals, plants and the environment. It recognizes how the health of each individual element contributes to the health of the whole and shows how obvious impacts in one area – for example, outbreaks of wildlife diseases – are often linked to environmental stress, as well as diseases that concurrently affect the health and wellbeing of other species. For instance, read how the disappearance of ducks in northern Nigeria helped human health officials investigate unexplained illness among children in nearby villages.Opens In A New Window

It is no surprise, then, that One Health advocates believe our environmental, animal and human health organizations and professions must collaborate effectively and take actions to promote healthy humans and healthy animals supported by a healthy and sustainable environment. The Pennsylvania One Health Task Force supports this line of thinking by assembling a group of federal, state and academic stakeholders to work together, with one vision.  …”
