DUKE (USA) ONE HEALTH Newsletter - ISSUE 18 September 2019 ... Duke One Health Team Members Publish a Commentary on Zoonotic Influenza Viruses in Domestic Animals  Recently, Duke One Health team members Laura Borkenhagen, Mai-Juan Ma, and Greg Gray and Professor Mo Salman (Colorado State University) published an important review article in the in the International Journal of Infectious Diseases. They reviewed the risk of human infections with influenza A viruses circulating in poultry, swine, horses, cats, and dogs and concluded that, while all have risk of contributing to a pandemic, the greatest risk now seems to be from swine viruses. Their findings and conclusion are novel and a bit of a departure from the mainstream thinking, which is frequently most concerned about avian influenza viruses. Cheetah Conservation Fund and Foundation for Human Rabies Education and Eradication Are Providing Rabies Prevention Education and Mobile Vaccination Clinics in Namibia

August 27, 2019

Cheetah Conservation Fund and Foundation for Human Rabies Education and Eradication Are Providing Rabies Prevention Education and Mobile Vaccination Clinics in Namibia Written by: Jj Muehlhausen, Cheetah Conservation Fund The World Health Organization (WHO) reports show more than 59,000 deaths a year from rabies with high occurrences predominantly in Africa and Asia. The main problem with rabies all over the world is the lack of education about the disease and especially in rural areas because of so many feral dogs. For this reason, the Foundation for Human Rabies Education and Eradication (FHREE) took action. Since 1998, FHREE has participated in providing rabies prevention education and canine population control programs. In 2018, FHREE teamed up with the Cheetah Conservation Fund (CCF) to further their efforts. CCF is a world-renowned international field research and education facility in Namibia. They provide research, education and conservation programs throughout Namibia to save cheetahs and other endangered species. CCF host Future Farmers of Africa and Future Conservationist of Africa training at their centre and move about the country to reach thousands of farmers, students and educators each year through their education and training programs. Rabies is a problem affecting the wildlife in Namibia. ... Animal Influenza Virus Infections in Humans: A Commentary

August 12, 2019

Animal Influenza Virus Infections in Humans: A Commentary Borkenhagen LK, Salman MD, Ma M-Juan, Gray GC, Animal Influenza Virus Infections in Humans: A Commentary, International Journal of Infectious Diseases (2019), doi: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.ijid.2019.08.002 Abstract Here we review evidence for influenza A viruses (IAVs) moving from swine, avian, feline, equine, and canine species to infect humans. We review case reports, sero-epidemiological, archeo-epidemiological, environmental, and historical studies and consider trends in livestock farming. Although this focused review is not systematic, the aggregated data point to industrialized swine farming as the most likely source of future pandemic viruses, yet IAV surveillance on such farms is remarkably sparse. We recommend increased biosafety and biosecurity training for farm administrators and swine workers with One Health-oriented virus surveillance throughout industrialized farming and meat production lines. Collaborative partnerships with human medical researchers could aid in efforts to mitigate emerging virus threats by offering new surveillance and diagnostic technologies to livestock farming industries.

The two disciplines share the same fields of science with some differences in the content and the covered species.  Historically, individuals who received dual training have greatly influenced the development of general medicine. Dr. Bruce Kaplan, the co-founding member of the One Health Initiative team, and Dr. Steven W. Atwood, member of the One Health Initiative Advisory Board, published a paper that advances the idea of establishing unique DVM/VMD - MD/DO programs in the U.S. and internationally.  The authors present several contributions of previous and current dual-trained professionals to illustrate the potential impact of multidisciplinary training using a One Health Model.
