Health and Nanoplastics, and One Health

May 16, 2025

Scoping the Risks of Micro- and Nano-Plastics Global Health, Human Reproduction and Possibly Wider Implications*

Addressing the Problem:
Five Approaches for Solutions
  1. Material Sciences & Innovation
  2. Toxicity Regime & Regulations
  3. Multilateral – diplomatics, etc.(Busan, industry)
  4. One Health
  5. Public Campaigns (Cf: smoking)

N.B. Future of the Human Race (Evolution)

Plastics Links with One Health (1)

Interconnectedness: One Health emphasizes the shared risks and benefits

across human, animal, plant and environmental health – MNP moves across all

four

  1. Collaborative Approach: It requires cooperation and communication

among various disciplines, including medicine, veterinary science, biology and

environmental science – MNP prevalence in each field increasing

  1. Disease Prevention: One Health focuses on disease outbreaks by clarifying

the underlying factors leading to their emergence – MNP new cause

  1. Zoonotic Diseases: It addresses zoonotic diseases: diseases that can spread

from animals to humans – MNP now from humans to animals, plants, etc.

  1. Antimicrobial Resistance: One Health tackles antimicrobial resistance, a

growing threat that impacts human and animal health – MNP now major

factor in AMR

Plastics Links with One Health (2)

  1. Food Safety: It promotes safe food systems by considering he health of

animals and the environment involved in food production – much of it more

and more MNP  infested

  1. Environmental Health: One Health acknowledges the importance of a

healthy environment for human and animal health, including the impact of

climate change and pollution – MNP “pollution”

  1. Ecosystem Health: It recognizes that healthy ecosystems are essential for

overall health and well-being, including the health of humans and animals and

plants–MNP in ocean life, animals, plants and trees (e.g. soil

vectors ); unknown long-term effects

Plastics and One Health (3)

  1. Global Health Security: One Health plays a crucial role in

strengthening global health security by addressing shared health

threats  one of which is increasingly clear includes MNPs

  1. Sustainable Solutions: It aims for sustainable solutions that benefit

all three aspects of One Health – human, animal, and environmental

– MNP is a new agenda for One Health – urgently needed

TO: The Honorable Donald J. Trump, President of the United States – PLEA for Health & Human Services (HHS) reform May 12, 2025

May 12, 2025

May 12, 2025

TO: The Honorable Donald J. Trump

       President of the United States

RE: One Health Initiative Team PLEA via (21) Kahn-Kaplan-Monath (@OneHealthNews) / X (back-to-back Tweets) May 12, 2025:

  1. Hasty retreat is essential to partially salvage President Trump’s “Make America Healthy Again!!” goals. Mr. President, we urge seeking scientific re-direction from remaining traditional public health and biomedical research experts at CDC, FDA, NIH, USPHS, USDA and academe.
  2. HHS policy “Making America Sick again!” Massive layoffs with misinformed, misguided anti-science, unconventional restructuring is antithesis to One Health concept-approach, i.e. “help[ing] protect and/or sav[ing] untold millions of lives in our generation and for those to come.”

Respectfully submitted by,

One Health Initiative Autonomous pro bono Team:

About

The One Health concept is a worldwide strategy for expanding interdisciplinary collaborations and communications in all aspects of health care for humans, animals and the environment. The synergism achieved will advance health care for the 21st century and beyond by accelerating biomedical research discoveries, enhancing public health efficacy, expeditiously expanding the scientific knowledge base, and improving medical education and clinical care. When properly implemented, it will help protect and save untold millions of lives in our present and future generations.

“May there never develop in me the notion that my education is complete but give me the strength and leisure and zeal continually to  enlarge my knowledge.”

Genetic tracing of market wildlife and viruses at the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic

May 6, 2025

SUMMARY

Zoonotic spillovers of viruses have occurred through the animal trade worldwide. The start of the COVID-19

pandemic was traced epidemiologically to the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market. Here, we analyze environ-

mental qPCR and sequencing data collected in the Huanan market in early 2020. We demonstrate that mar-

ket-linked severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) genetic diversity is consistent

with market emergence and find increased SARS-CoV-2 positivity near and within a wildlife stall. We identify

wildlife DNA in all SARS-CoV-2-positive samples from this stall, including species such as civets, bamboo

rats, and raccoon dogs, previously identified as possible intermediate hosts. We also detect animal viruses

that infect raccoon dogs, civets, and bamboo rats. Combining metagenomic and phylogenetic approaches,

we recover genotypes of market animals and compare them with those from farms and other markets. This

analysis provides the genetic basis for a shortlist of potential intermediate hosts of SARS-CoV-2 to prioritize

for serological and viral sampling.

Announcement: ‘Invitation to Collaborate on Regional Project Proposals: ‘Advancing Societal Understanding and Care for Our World’

May 4, 2025

May 4, 2025

Dear Colleagues

Guided by the unifying theme inspired by UNESCO—“to cultivate an active care for the world and with those with whom we share it”—this University- led, Affiliate-supported groundbreaking initiative proposes the formation of  regional steering committees and sub-regional coordinating teams.

It is grounded in the recognition that innovative approaches to thinking, learning, and enabling action are not only timely but also essential in addressing the complex global challenges we face.

This initiative is part of a broader, parallel effort taking place in global regions to date including  Africa, the Americas, Asia and Europe, reflecting a shared commitment to transformative change through collaboration.

Requests for learning more about regional project proposal developments will be forwarded  directly to respective regional contacts.

Thank  you and PLEASE see attached.
