Tackling antimicrobial resistance in agribusiness and environment – Institute for Molecular Bioscience – University of Queensland (uq.edu.au)
July 5, 2024
A ‘One Health’ approach
“One of the main drivers of drug-resistant pathogens is the misuse and overuse of antibiotics, both in humans and animals,” Professor Blaskovich said.
“Nearly two-thirds of all antibiotics used worldwide in 2017 were for animals, and these are often used promote growth or prevent diseases rather than treat infections.
“It is imperative that treatments for livestock and companion animals don’t overlap with equivalent human therapeutics to reduce transmission of resistance across sectors.”
The Centre brings together multidisciplinary teams and applies a ‘One Health’ approach to antimicrobial resistance to acknowledge the interconnections between humans, animals, and the environment.

July 1, 2024
The Pandemic Prevention Leadership Initiative (PPLI) (2024-25) is designed to build capacity and strengthen collaborative approaches in Southeast Asia to address threats to global health security and biodiversity conservation posed by unregulated trade in wildlife species. Through its activities, the initiative will promote the development of a network of leaders from multiple disciplines able to work together to address the spillover of high-consequence pathogens (HCPs) in Southeast Asian live animal markets and supply chains, from prevention through response. The PPLI promotes capacity strengthening in early to mid-career professionals by incorporating the Pandemic Prevention Fellows Program which utilizes a cohort approach and case-based training to directly support the development of a multidisciplinary network of leaders across the Southeast Asia region to address the ever evolving and expanding global health and security threats related to zoonotic spillover of HCPs and associated practices impacting wildlife populations. The Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), EpiEcos, and the University of California – Davis (UCD), as well as regional subject-matter experts, will deliver the case-based training program and support the development and implementation of individual projects led by Pandemic Prevention Fellows.

“ … Global South Leading the Way in One Health
Another panel discussion explored the role of the Global South in driving innovation for One Health, an approach that integrates human, animal, and environmental health to prevent pandemics. Panelists noted that discussions on One Health is focusing on zoonotic diseases. Effective interventions require community engagement and context-specific solutions that consider local consumption patterns and human-animal-livestock interfaces. Public-private partnerships and private sector innovations in sampling and surveillance were identified as crucial for advancing One Health. The discussion emphasized that overcoming the challenges of One Health requires not just technical solutions but also political commitment and cross-stakeholder collaboration.
